Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), a member of the Malvaceae family, is an herbaceous annual or perennial plant native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and North Africa and now cultivated throughout the tropics. The plant produces large, showy flowers — ranging from white to pale yellow with a distinctive dark red base — and distinctive fleshy red calyces that ripen after flowering. The flowers, calyces, and leaves are widely used in traditional botanical preparations and culinary applications across Caribbean, African, Mexican, and Asian cultures. Commonly known as Roselle, Flor de Jamaica, Sorrel (Caribbean), and Karkadé. Prepared as a concentrated organic liquid tincture.
